Rep. Steve Scalise, the congressman wounded this week by a left-wing zealot gunman, is now in serious condition and is showing signs of improvement, doctors said in an update Saturday afternoon released by the congressman's office. He arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at the hospital, said Friday.

He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged.

"Scalise continues to show signs of improvement". Hodgkinson has been identified as the suspect in the Wednesday, June 14, 2017, Washington D.C. shooting.

In a statement Saturday, Matt Mika's family says he will remain in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital at least through the weekend.

"Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in the statement. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers". Hodgkinson sprayed rifle fire at Republican congressmen on Wednesday as they practiced for a charity baseball game.

'I am being investigated for firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director'
Richard Cullen is a former Virginia attorney general and a former United States attorney for the eastern district of Virginia. He could order Rosenstein to do so, but under federal regulations Rosenstein would need to show "good cause" to fire Mueller.

The FBI said it was investigating the shooter's "activities and social media impressions" in the months leading up to the attack. This person was not authorised to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Law enforcement officials have said they found a list of Republican lawmakers' names on the body of James Hodgkinson, who apparently had been in the Washington area for several months stalking his targets.

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

As for Scalise, he's still in critical condition, but he's improving. Leaders decided the game would go on as scheduled at Nationals Park in Washington, home of the city's Major League Baseball team.
