Rep. Steve Scalise remains in critical condition at a Washington, DC-area hospital following a shooting on Wednesday.
The Friday visit announced by Ryan's staff comes with Scalise in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Scalise was shot in the hip while practicing for the Congressional baseball game on Wednesday morning.
Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, who later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.
The doctor said the congressman will need more surgeries to fix damage to his abdominal area and bones and will require therapy after leaving the hospital.
Scalise's surgeon says he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", despite being at risk of death when he arrived at the hospital.
The man who opened fire on Republican lawmakers in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday was carrying a handwritten list of House Republicans' names, NBC News' Pete Williams reports.
