Afghan commando kills two American soldiers before being shot dead

Saturday's attack comes, too, as the Trump administration debates sending up to 5,000 additional American troops to Afghanistan to the help break what senior military leaders have declared a stalemate.

Three US troops were wounded in March when an Afghan soldier opened fire in Helmand, in the first known insider attack on worldwide forces this year.

The commando was killed in the return fire.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A statement from the USA military said merely that the military was "aware of an incident in eastern Afghanistan". The official asked not to be identified because the information had not yet been officially released and the USA military was still investigating the episode. One U.S. soldier was wounded and has been evacuated for medical treatment. Next of kin notification is underway.

An Afghan soldier killed a USA soldier and wounded two more in an attack at the governor's compound in Jalalabad, Nangarhar.

Vice President Pence addressed the incident during an appearance Saturday.

The dead man's mother, Valerie Castile , speaking to reporters outside the court afterwards, said: "I'm mad as hell right now". The case got immediate national attention when Castile's girlfriend live-streamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook .

"Green on blue" violence, or insider attacks by Afghan soldiers on us or other foreign troops, have become rare as coalition forces have mostly withdrawn from Afghanistan.

"When heroes fall, Americans grieve", Pence said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of American heroes". Once trained to conduct raids much like their USA counterparts, the majority of Afghan commando units have turned into a backbone force for the fledgling Afghan army.

Green-on-blue attacks have been a major problem during Nato's long years fighting alongside Afghan forces.

The Pentagon says three USA soldiers were killed and another was wounded Saturday in eastern Afghanistan. The shooter was killed by other soldiers.

Several Afghan security force members were killed during an overnight operation in Helmand province on Friday when a U.S. military aircraft opened fire during an overnight operation.

It gave no further details of the incident but said it was under investigation.

Hundreds of US Marines recently arrived in Helmand to take over an advising mission as part of a NATO-led coalition training and assisting local forces.
