"That is a great, great team of complete professionals, so let's let him do his job", former independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who investigated President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, told ABC News.

Trump appeared to confirm Friday that he is under investigation for obstruction of justice and seemed to use a social media posting to criticize Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein.

Yesterday, The Washington Post reported special counsel Robert Mueller was investigating the President for possible obstruction of justice.

"Nice", Trump wrote on Twitter, later repeating his accusation that the probe was a "witch hunt".

The Republican president has repeatedly complained about the probe, calling it a witch hunt and saying Democrats can not accept his election victory.

"Why is that Hillary Clinton's family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked.

Comey prepared multiple contemporaneous memos documenting conversations with Trump that made him uneasy in the weeks before his May 9 firing.

Donald Trump has blasted the "phony story" that he is being investigated for obstruction of justice, saying it is "the single greatest witch hunt in American political history".

It's what our fans want to see, it's what we provide in this league. "The last couple of days I've thought about it [his future]". The Warriors made one of the great playoff runs of all time . "It's easier said than done obviously, but that's the goal".

Vice President Mike Pence has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.

Mr Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia Attorney-General and United States attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mr Mueller.

The Washington Post, citing unidentified officials, carried the report on Wednesday.

Comey testified before a Senate panel last week that Trump spoke privately with him several times, including by telephone and at White House meetings. He wrote in multiple social media posts that he views Mueller - a long-serving former Federal Bureau of Investigation director respected by both parties - as leading a biased probe with the singular aim of dislodging Trump.

Investigators in Mueller's office are set to interview Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers, a source familiar with the matter has told CNN. Trump conceded in an interview after the episode that he was thinking about the Russian Federation controversy when he made that decision.

The memo sent Thursday asks for records related to foreign travel, contacts with Russian "officials, agents or nationals" and background investigations into the top Trump associates now targeted by Mueller's probe. Any such step would face a steep hurdle as it would require approval by the US House of Representatives, which is controlled by Mr Trump's fellow Republicans.

On Thursday afternoon, Trump sent two tweets attacking his former opponent.
