UK's May meets fire survivors, faces criticism

France offered the United Kingdom its assistance in investigation of the causes of the Grenfell Tower fire in western London, local media reported, citing French Minister for Territorial Cohesion Richard Ferrand. May was jeered after she made a visit to the community Friday.

"Under his leadership London has been left dangerously exposed", Mr Streeting told the Daily Mirror this week. British health authorities say that 19 fire survivors are still being treated at London hospitals, and 10 of them remain in critical condition.

The Sun newspaper said 65 people are now feared dead or missing in the fire.

The local Grenfell Action Group had claimed, before and during a major 10-million-pound refurbishment of Grenfell Tower previous year, that the block constituted a fire risk and residents had warned that access to the site for emergency vehicles was "severely restricted".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan wrote an incensed letter to British Prime Minister Theresa May, warning her that community reaction to the fire is becoming " increasingly angry" due to poor political response.

The official death toll from the blaze now sits at 30, up from 17 overnight, as firefighters continue the extremely hard process of recovering bodies from within the tower.

Kate Taylor, who lives about three miles from the tower, said she joined the protest to show solidarity with the victims, and said she agreed with the shouts of "Tories out".

"There is considerable damage within Grenfell Tower", he said.

Theresa May 'confident' of Queen's Speech vote with or without DUP deal
Voters in Northern Ireland who support the reunification of the island are now without representation in the British parliament. The party would oppose any deal that would, he said, undermine that agreement.

Metropolitan Police commander Stuart Cundy responded to speculation that the number of dead could exceed 100, saying: "For those of us that have been down there, it's pretty emotional, so I hope it is not triple figures, but I can't be drawn on the numbers".

So as questions mount, what needs to be done to ensure tragedies like Grenfell Tower don't occur again and who is really to blame? "Based on what we know there is nothing to suggest that the fire was started deliberately", Cundy said.

After meeting with Grenfell survivors on Friday, Ms May announced a 5 million pound (AUS$8 million) fund to help them and expressed sorrow for their plight.

Pressed again on whether she had failed to understand the anger felt by the public, she said: "This was a bad tragedy that took place". The leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, the authority that owns the tower block, told the BBC it would not use the type of cladding fitted to Grenfell Tower in other buildings in the borough.

"It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood", she said in a message marking the event.

Critics have said that it is because of the empty properties that people will be forced outside of the local area.

Hundreds of protesters marched along Whitehall in opposition to the response from the Government following the tragedy that has already claimed at least 30 lives. The tower block housed up to 600 residents, with dozens evacuated by firefighters and hospitalized, while an unknown number of others became stuck on upper floors as the only way out of the building, the stairwell, was filled with heavy smoke.
