Fowler takes early lead at US Open

Jordan Spieth also made only one birdie, giving the last two U.S. Open champions a total of two birdies between them on a day when Rickie Fowler opened with a 65 and seven other players broke 70 from the morning wave when the wind was manageable. Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf each shot 7-under 63 in the first round at Baltusrol in the 1980 U.S. Open.

Jason Day had two triple bogeys and posted a 79, his worst score ever in the U.S. Open.

While that was a fairly common sentiment, there were more than a few notable exceptions, as Fowler and Sergio Garcia (2-under) were the only players among the top 10 on the Official World Golf Rankings to break par.

"And not necessarily all with disgusting golf shots. But that's golf", William Hill sports book director Nick Bogdanovich said. By the Masters this year, he expressed gratefulness for his career while saying it had come in "under" his expectations, even with his batch of good non-major finishes, his No. 9 world ranking, his riveting playoff win in the 2015 Players Championship and his four PGA Tour wins, including the Honda Classic in February in Florida this year. But DJ, Rory, Day and Rahm, they're all toast.

There was plenty of talk this week about how wide the fairways were at Erin Hills, and how the game's big hitters might be able to eat this course up.

"It was nice. You don't get many rounds at the US Open that are stress-free". "The big thing is staying out of the fescue".

But Fowler paced the field by playing almost flawless golf by hiting 12 of 14 fairways.

"It's tough for these guys to go wire to wire". If I don't three-putt, I shoot even.

Ormsby, though, would double bogey his 16th hole after his third shot at the par-five seventh went through the green.

A further bogey on the eighth saw him drop back to level par, leaving him off the pace.

Besides Fowler, the leaderboard is full of long shots. He shot 42 on the back. Las Vegas resident Kevin Na (200-1), Patrick Reed (60-1), Mark Leishman (100-1) and Adam Hadwin (125-1) are at 4 under.

"He said 'The blimp is not looking good.' I guess it was nose down". "Casey and Leishman are live". "But I'd rather be remembered for something that's done on Sunday".

"I'm hoping for Koepka".

Walsh says his pilot likely survived because he is experienced and takes special precautions before each flight. "He's a long hitter I thought could play well here". Can he find it in time to get back in the mix?

Bogdanovich and Sherman think Scott can make a run at his second major. Hopefully I can keep hitting my irons and wedges the way I have been and tighten up off the tee.

Johnson is at 50-1 after closing as the prohibitive 7-1 favorite. "But he's not in a good position either". Both men will require to shoot lower scores on day two if they are to be around for the weekend.

Red numbers are good for golfers. "It's the kind of golf course that if you're on point and playing well and you're in the fairways, you really feel like you can be aggressive and attack and make some birdies. It will dry out and there won't be any more 3 and 4 unders".
