James T. Hodgkinson, 66, allegedly opened fire on a Congressional baseball team as Republicans were practicing for an annual game to be played at Nationals Park Thursday. According to the hospital, he sustained a single shot to his left hip, with the bullet traveling across his pelvis causing bone fractures, internal organ injury and severe bleeding. He remains in critical condition. Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, .

Also shot were a congressional staffer and members of the Capitol police force. Rep. Martha McSally, R-Arizona, said the game will still go on as scheduled.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said he was in the batting cage when he heard an isolated gunshot. Barton, a Republican from Texas and the team's manager, joked that his players "wouldn't be this nice next year".

From the stands, Vince Wetzel, a resident of Sacramento, California, who is visiting Washington and made a decision to take in the game, said, "It's just a good call to put aside political differences and just play some baseball".

Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, a medical doctor and Iraq War veteran, told Fox News he administered aid to Scalise after the shooting stopped, putting a compression on his wound.

Wenstrup said Scalise "was as courageous as he could possibly be". Mika requires assistance to breath and will need more surgery. His aide, Zack Barth, who was shot by the Virginia assailant, walked across the field on crutches. "Matt has been alert, conscious and communicating through notes".

Texas Rep. Roger Williams was also injured Wednesday but still coached the Republican team during Thursday's contest. Scalise, along with another victim, remains in critical condition. Although the weather in Washington looks headed toward a near-flawless summer night, an obvious and immovable shadow is being cast over Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game - a tradition that began more than a century ago.

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump arrived at the hospital with flowers Wednesday evening, where Trump sat by Scalise's bedside and met with his wife, Jennifer, as well as Griner and her wife.

Trump tweeted, "Just left hospital". Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter.

Sava said he was surprised by initial media reports that said Scalise was in stable condition.

"He's in some trouble", Trump said.

Later, House Republican and Democratic leaders called for unity and praised the police, while Trump in an address from the White House said that the prayers of the nation and world are with Scalise.

The Capitol Police Memorial Fund was added to the list of charities that will receive money raised by the game in honor of two members of Scalise's security detail who were at the Wednesday practice session and returned fire.

"A lot of times in politics we have divisions but it shouldn't come to violence", he said. "America salutes both of their courage".

"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", the president said.
