The U.S. military apologized for the deaths and senior worldwide diplomat in Afghanistan said authorities are investigating the possibility the incident could be connected to the shooting by the Afghan soldier.
In a statement, the Pentagon said the wounded soldier had been evacuated for treatment and the incident was under investigation.
In a statement, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming the soldier was a Taliban infiltrator.
A White House spokesperson traveling with Donald Trump in New Jeresey said the United States president was aware of and following the situation.
"The Afghan army soldier was killed in return fire", Attaullah Khogyani, spokesperson for the governor of Nangarhar province.
The apparent insider attack occurred Achin, an Islamic State stronghold along the Pakistan border in Nangarhar province. In mid-March, three U.S soldiers were shot and wounded in another apparent insider attack at an Afghan military base in Helmand province.
A Taliban spokesman claimed the shooter was a part of the militant group and had killed four Americans and injured several more, but this has yet to be confirmed by government sources.
"On my way here I was informed that US servicemembers were killed and wounded in an attack in Afghanistan", Pence said.

USA casualties in Afghanistan have been decreasing lately, but Achin has emerged as a particularly deadly point for US troops this year.
Either way, the USA offered "deepest condolences" for killing the Afghan security forces.
There are now 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan training, advising and assisting the Afghanistan army.
