The Congressional Baseball Game has been played since 1909 and is a cherished event for Capitol Hill.
As his colleagues played baseball in his honor Thursday evening, MedStar Washington Hospital Center medical gave an update on Rep. Steve Scalise, who remains in critical condition but has improved. The House lurched back to business in a somber mood as law enforcement tracked the path the shooter traveled to his ballfield carnage.

Capitol Police officers in Mr Scalise's security detail returned fire, and Hodgkinson later died from his wounds.
It emerged Hodgkinson had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.
"Had Scalise not been there (with his protective detail) it would have been a slaughter", Taylor said somberly. But Slater said authorities were still working to determine a motive and had "no indication" Hodgkinson knew about the ball practice ahead of time.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Scalise remained in critical condition on Thursday after the latest surgery. We think Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe was correct in not shying away from the issue of gun control when asked at a news conference if he was anxious about the safety of politicians. All proceeds from the game go to charity. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times. He was hit in the left hip, suffering injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding. He is the House's No. 3 GOP leader.

Family members of Matt Mika say the MI native was shot multiple times in his chest and arm, and he remains in the intensive care unit in critical condition at George Washington University Hospital.
Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch. Democrats won in an 11-2 blowout.
Hodgkinson told the YMCA on Tuesday that he wanted to cancel his membership because he was moving, the YMCA said in a statement. The Capitol's usual partisan combativeness, though not absent, was less pointed than usual, and warm words were exchanged between some lawmakers with starkly opposing political philosophies. "It'll be a different game without him there". "But you have long since earned my respect, and you deserve to be heard, and you are an honorable individual".
Reps. Garret Graves and Cedric Richmond, whose districts border Scalise's, went to the hospital earlier Wednesday to support the majority whip and his family. "Republicans and Democrats differ on issues that I think we can have a civil discussion". It's a sentiment lawmakers frequently express after mass shootings or terrorist attacks, only to see their sharp oratorical elbows gradually return.
In a joint interview with CNN, Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. - both decked out in LSU garb - said the game was a symbol of unity for a divided congress.
Many lawmakers in both parties, as well as the president, called for unity after the shooting. Some have suggested using federal money to provide security cameras in their offices, while others spoke of a need for protection when groups of them appear in public.
He also recognized the other four people wounded in the attack - two capitol police officers, a congressional staffer, and a lobbyist. He says the country is praying for all of the victims who are still recovering.
