Republicans and Democrats alike were shocked and saddened to learn that House Minority Whip Steve Scalise and several others were shot Wednesday morning while practicing for a charity baseball game.
Scalise, who underwent a third surgery Thursday, is listed in critical condition after being shot through the hip.
He was in a critical condition Wednesday night and doctors said he would need several more operations. The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said in a written statement.
Mr Trump spoke to the House of Representatives majority whip's family during a visit to MedStar Washington Hospital Centre on Wednesday evening.
"We did get a message earlier that he's now in critical condition after surgery". We will provide periodic updates.

Despite the injuries and frightening moments on the Alexandria, Virginia field, the congressional baseball game planned for Thursday will go on as scheduled. The suspect, James Hodgkinson, was killed when officers returned fire. "I can not believe that based on how members of Congress look that they play baseball instead of softball", he joked.
"There's no large trees, no huts, there was nothing for them to hide around, so they were just laying as flat as they could on the ground, as shots were firing", a witness said.
President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, visited with Scalise late Wednesday.

"If Scalise was not there, he's the one with the security detail, we wouldn't have had any protection, and God knows how bad that might have been."The other victims include Zack Barth, a Houstonian who works for Austin Congressman Roger Williams; Matt Mika, a Tyson Foods lobbyist; and U.S. Capitol Police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey.
