George Washington University Hospital said Thursday afternoon his condition had improved from critical to serious.
Shooter James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., was shot and died later Wednesday of his wounds in the hospital.
The shooter was killed by police officers whose work won praise from Trump in his remarks.
Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said both of Hodgkinson's firearms - a 9 mm handgun and 7.62 mm Chinese-made assault rifle - were purchased legally. His white van, parkedat the YMCA gym beside the practice field, was searched; his cellphone, computer and camera were recovered.
The popular annual face-off, which raises money for charity, is scheduled to go forward as planned Thursday evening at Nationals Park in Washington.
