Ryan condemned the shooting and praised the Capitol police on the House floor later Wednesday. A helicopter arrived to medevac at least one victim.
FBI Agent Tim Slater would not characterize the attack, saying "We are exploring all angles".
The news of the shooting reverberated on Capitol Hill, where security was increased and regular proceedings were canceled or postponed.
Congressman Steve Scalise underwent surgery after being shot in the hip and remained in critical condition, according to MedStar Washington Hospital Centre. A US Capitol Police officer who was also hurt in the gun attack was also receiving treatment at the facility, situated about three miles northeast of the White House.

When the federal officers first began firing, those in the dugout weren't certain whether there was more than one shooter, Rep. Democratic former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille said he had spoken often with the man on recent mornings at the nearby YMCA.
Tyson Foods spokesman Derek Burleson said Wednesday afternoon that Mr. Mika, Tyson's director of governmental relations, was in a local hospital in critical condition following surgery.
Trump praised Scalise as "a patriot" and "a fighter" and said Scalise has the prayers of the "entire nation" behind him. Gunshots hit the YMCA's windows, and the building was shut down and the block cordoned off, NPR's Tom Bowman reported from the scene.

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California said on Twitter that Thursday's game is still on.
