President Donald Trump revealed that the shooter who attacked the Congressional Republican baseball practice in Alexandria had died after he was shot by capitol police.
The bravery and quick response of U.S. Capitol Police prevented Wednesday's shooting at a Northern Virginia baseball field from becoming a "massacre", congressmen at the center of the terrifying ordeal said.
One neighbor, a man in jeans and a straw cowboy hat who declined to give his name, said Hodgkinson has not lived at the house for "quite a while".
The shooting marks the first time a sitting member of Congress has been shot since Rep.
Collins, who was the first member of Congress to endorse Donald Trump during the presidential campaign, went on to suggest the violence was an understandable reaction to Democrats' "outrageous" criticisms of Trump.
"Prior to entering surgery, the whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone", the statement said. "He is grateful for the courageous actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues", said a statement released by the congressman's staff. In all, five people were taken to area hospitals, including the suspect, Alexandria police said. "He will recover from this assault".
The gunman had a rifle and "a lot of ammo", said Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at the practice.
