President Donald Trump has the right to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 us election and possible ties to the Trump campaign, but has no plans to do so, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Tuesday.
However, according to the Washington Post, since Mr Comey's firing, Mr Mueller, the special prosecutor, has started to look at Mr Trump's actions as part of the wider investigation into alleged Russian Federation interference in the 2016 USA presidential election.
Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence committee, said any move to oust Mueller would "be the last straw" for many in Congress and would have "echoes of Watergate", when President Richard Nixon dismissed special prosecutor Archibald Cox over Cox's subpoenas for White House tapes.
In every practical sense, Trump is stuck with Mueller.
The special counsel declined to comment on the Post's report.
If DT fires Robert Mueller, we officially pass Watergate & Trump becomes most corrupt POTUS of greatest scandal in U.S. history.
This is true for reasons similar to those that prompted Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from the same investigation. Then, on Monday evening, Newsmax CEO and Trump pal Chris Ruddy said that the president was "considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", which, Ruddy added, "would be a very significant mistake". Rosenstein would be the one to fire Mueller, which he repeatedly assured senators Tuesday he would not consider without "good cause".
New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat, opened her line of questioning, in the hearing that was supposed to focus on the Justice Department budget, by asking whether Rosenstein had seen any evidence of good cause to fire Mueller.
United States attorney general next in scandal's spotlight
During his confirmation hearing, Sessions testified under oath that he had no meetings with Russian officials during the campaign. In addition, Comey has said Sessions did not respond when he complained that he did not want to be left alone with Trump again.
Christopher Ruddy, a friend of Mr Trump's, had claimed that the president was considering firing Mr Mueller and questions were raised by Trump aides over the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's impartiality. Sanders confirmed to reporters Tuesday night that Trump did interview Mueller.
"Does Trump think Mueller needs this paycheck to meet a vehicle payment or something?"
Investigators will also look for any statements the president may have made publicly and privately to people outside the government about his reasons for firing Comey and his concerns about the Russian Federation probe and other related investigations, people familiar with the matter said.
"I think that's the wrong answer right now", he said.
The leaders of the Senate intelligence committee say In a statement issued Wednesday that they "look forward to future engagements" with Robert Mueller.
"I appointed him; I stand by that decision, " he said.
Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel. Comey stopped short of directly accusing Trump of obstruction, however.
