As noon approached Wednesday, the building in the west London neighborhood of North Kensington was still smoldering and breaking out into flames.
May's office at Downing Street says in a statement that the leader is "deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in the Grenfell Tower and is being kept constantly updated on the situation".
"Following this morning's fire at Grenfell Tower, West London, we have treated and taken 64 patients to six hospitals across London, where 20 people are now in critical care".
Horrified witnesses told how they saw people jumping from windows as high as the 15th floor of a tower block as a huge fire engulfed the building, reported The Evening Standard. London's Metropolitan Police said a number of people were being treated for a range of injuries, but did not provide more specifics.
London mayor Sadiq Khan said the fire raised questions over safety of high-rise blocks like Grenfell Tower. "She had the baby in hand - she was gesturing like she was going to throw the baby out".
At least six people dead and dozens were injured after a massive fire rapidly tore through a 24-story apartment building in west London in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.
Authorities have confirmed that six people died from the blaze, and that the number could still rise as they continue their search and rescue operations. A plume of smoke stretched for miles (kilometers) over the capital.
More than 200 firefighters, backed up by 40 fire engines, fought for hours to try to bring the blaze, one of the biggest seen in central London in memory, under control, it stated.
"It's the most terrifying thing I've ever seen".
Billionaire Moshiri to spearhead Everton’s Italian job
Indeed, it is only by virtue of Falcinelli’s prowess in the final third that Crotone still remains in contention to survive. In Romelu Lukaku, Koeman has a player with the capability of firing Everton to far headier heights than seventh place.
A website run by the "Grenfell Action Group" said residents of the tower had expressed concerns over the safety of the building, specifically pointing to fire risks. "They couldn't stop the fire".
"He obviously couldn't find an escape route and he couldn't leave", she said.
Paul Munakr, a resident who lived on the seventh floor and who successfully escaped, told the BBC people were shouting from below, telling people not to jump.
"There's people at their windows: 'Help me, help me, help me!' You can see the fire go into the house and into the last room that they're in, and just engulfing their whole apartment".
People at the scene spoke of being unable to reach friends and family who had been inside.
Nassima Boutrig, who lives opposite the building, says she was awakened by sirens and smoke so thick that it filled her home as well.
Tamara, one witness, told the BBC: "There's people, like, throwing their kids out: 'Just save my children, just save my children!'".
If there is a fire in another flat, residents should stay put unless advised by firefighters, to close doors and windows, and to call 999 - never assume someone else has done so.
