The parents of the 22-year-old college student said he is on a Medivac flight on his way home. His parents and siblings were waiting for him at a municipal airport in Cincinnati. They said they were grateful that their son, who was detained previous year while traveling as a tourist, would "finally be with people who love him". And how does the Trump administration respond?
At the time, North Korea claimed Mr Warmbier committed an anti-state crime with "the tacit connivance of the U.S. government and under its manipulation".
As Warmbier's release came on the same day the former National Basketball Association star Dennis Rodman arrived in the North, it remains to be seen whether his visit is related to the Americans who are still detained in North Korea.
Rodman said the issue of several Americans detained by North Korea is "not my goal right now", in remarks made in Beijing before the release of Warmbier was publicly disclosed.
"Dennis Rodman had nothing to do with the release of Mr. Warmbier", said Heather Nauert, a State Department spokeswoman.
Earlier Tuesday, Fred Warmbier told The Cincinnati Enquirer said the family would hold a news conference Wednesday in Cincinnati, with the details yet to be finalized.
Otto Warmbier was sentenced to hard labour for attempting to steal a propaganda sign while on a visit.
He was charged with "hostile acts against the state".
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Monday called North Korea the "most urgent and unsafe threat to peace and security", noting that its nuclear and missile programs have progressed despite worldwide condemnation and warnings. At the same time, they also told the AP that he was in a coma.
Warmbier was found guilty and sentenced in March 2016 to 15 years hard labor.
Firefighters battling massive blaze in London high-rise
Tim Downie, who lives not far away, told Britain's Press Association that he feared the building could collapse. The fire involved almost every floor of the 24-story building.
Foreign detainees in North Korea have previously recanted confessions, saying they were made under pressure.
While North Korea's move to free Warmbier could potentially provide an opening for talks on security issues, the prospects still appear bleak.
The Warmbiers were told that the American student had come down with a case of botulism soon after his trial - which lasted only one hour - and had been given a sleeping pill, from which he never woke up.
Tillerson, at a U.S. Senate hearing on Tuesday, declined to comment on Warmbier's condition.
"During his time in our country, US citizen Kim Sang Duk attempted to overthrow the state, a hostile crime". In describing North Korea's progress in its pursuit of these nuclear and rocket armaments, Secretary of Defense James Mattis said the threat had recently magnified in pace and scope.
"It wasn't a situation where they asked", the official said of the American representatives.
Americans have been sentenced to years in North Korean prisons for seemingly minor offenses and likely could not expect leniency if the country's drug laws were violated.
Yun arrived on Monday, visited Warmbier with two doctors and demanded his release, the official said. They have taken steps, visible steps that we can confirm. On Tuesday, they condemned the North Korean regime but celebrated their son's release nonetheless. It agreed to let Swedish diplomats visit the prisoners, and with news of Warmbier's dire condition, Pyongyang urgently requested a meeting with a top US official at the United Nations last week.
Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said, "It's clear that Pyongyang has committed a grave injustice against Otto and his family, and the news that he may be returning with a serious medical problem raises concerns about what happened to him in North Korean custody".
"Our son is coming home", Fred Warmbier said to The Washington Post on Tuesday morning after his son was evacuated.
