Nassima Boutrig, who lives opposite the building, said she was awakened by sirens and smoke so thick that it filled her home as well.

"A lot of people said 'Help, help, help.' The fire brigade could only help downstairs".

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Rescue services, giving an early toll, said 30 people had been hospitalised, and eyewitnesses said they had seen others fall or jump from the stricken building. It was fire up, up, up.

A survivor of the massive high-rise apartment fire in London says he's lucky to be alive.

"There were no fire alarms", said Edward Daffarn 55, who was warned by a neighbor to flee. "There was heavy smoke in the hallway".

Others searched for information at makeshift evacuation centers set up at churches and recreation centers.

"At this time I am very sad to confirm that there have been a number of fatalities, I can not confirm the number at this time due to the size and complexity of this building", Dany Cotton, Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade told reporters. Volunteers handed out bottled water.

The fire in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower on Latimer Road near Notting Hill started in the early hours of Wednesday.

"This matter is of particular concern as there is only one entry and exit to Grenfell Tower during the improvement works", read a blog post by the Grenfell Action Group.

According to the Mail Online, the fire spread from the second floor to the roof of block in just 15 minutes, trapping residents inside as 200 firefighters struggled to bring it under control.

The fire involved almost every floor of the 24-story building.
