A man and his two sons were killed at their home in Ghani Khel, a district in the south of Nangarhar, on the border with Pakistan, said Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

Another soldier was wounded and the attacker was killed. The Achin district in eastern Nangarhar province, where the attack took place, is also thought to be a stronghold of IS.

USA military officials have not received any official reports of civilian casualties in the wake of an attack on a U.S.

An American official said the soldiers were shot in an apparent insider attack, also known as a "green-on-blue" incident because of the color-coding system used by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The soldier's condition was not immediately available Monday.

Claims of civilian casualties remain a contentious issue in the war against insurgents in Afghanistan, as President Donald Trump mulls sending more troops into the lengthy conflict.
