A senior Emirati official told AFP that this week's decision was not aimed at a change of regime in Qatar but to pressure the country to reshape its policy.
"This is a foreign policy that has gone wild", state minister for foreign affairs Anwar Gargash told AFP.
The announcement increases pressure on Qatar in a diplomatic and economic campaign to isolate the small Gulf Arab state, which is a critical global supplier of gas and hosts the biggest USA military base in the Middle East. "We need to put everything in check".
Throughout the interview, Sheikh Mohammed repeatedly denied that Qatar funded extremists and terrorist groups, the main reason given for this week's moves against it.
