United Kingdom elections: Preet Kaur Gill becomes first Sikh woman elected to Parliament

Preet Kaur Gill is a councillor from Sandwell, who will now be the first Sikh woman in the UK House of Commons.

"I am delighted to have been chosen as the Labour candidate for Edgbaston and it would be a huge honour to become the next Member of Parliament for the place where I was born and raised", Gill was quoted by the United Kingdom media as saying when she was chosen to represent Edgbaston.

Gill said that she will work hard with passion. Both the Sikh candidates, Gill and Dhesi - are from Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party.

"The British electorate have made important decisions and it's now my job to go to Westminster as part of a Labour team for the many, not the few, so thank you".

Gill was followed by Conservative Caroline Squire with 17,207 votes.

In the UK General Elections 2017, there was a total of 50 Indian-origin candidates.

The 2015 general election first-timers for the Tories Rishi Sunak and Suella Fernandes have also held on to their seats decisively with a margin of 23,108 and 21,555 votes respectively.

Preet was selected to replace colleague Gisela Stuart, the sitting MP in Birmingham Edgbaston, by the Labour National Executive Committee's interview panel on April 28.

Preet Kaur Gill, 44, held Birmingham Edgbaston for Labour with 53.3% of the vote.

Among some of the prominent losses, Labour's Neeraj Patil - the former mayor of the London Borough of Lambeth - lost to Justine Greening, the United Kingdom's education minister. Priti Patel who has been global development secretary and Rishi Sunak from Conservative Party retained their Witham and Richmond Yorkshire seats respectively.
