Stop driving farmers to misery, CPI-M tells government

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders were detained at Neemuch on Rajasthan-Madhya Pradesh border today as they tried to reach Mandsaur where five farmers were killed in police firing on Tuesday.

The focus of the farmers' agitation, however, remained in Mandsaur where Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was stopped from entering the sensitive region and was subsequently arrested. "Modi ji has waived loans of big corporate houses but he can give only goli (bullets) to farmers of the country", the Congress leader said.

Apart from Gandhi and Patwari, Congress leaders Shobha Ojha, Mohan Prakash and Jaivardhan Singh, were also taken into custody. I have said earlier that the farmers may have died in police firing. Presently, about 700 policemen have been deployed at the Neemuch border, according to Indian media.

The BJP-ruled Maharashtra saw the highest number of suicides in 2015-16 and Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh accounted for 6,535 (51.85 per cent) of total farmers' suicides in 2015, it said. Farmers in western Madhya Pradesh are demanding an increase in prices for their products and loan waivers.

He was accompanied by Sharad Yadav, Senior leader of SP, Digvijay Singh and many local leaders.

Meanwhile, the Congress has rebuffed reports of Gandhi participating in the ongoing farmers protest in Mandsaur, saying such a plan was never on the card for the party. Taking a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government, Gandhi said, "Modi can not grant farmers a loan waiver or fair rates".

In Dhar district, protesters set a truck on fire near Phulgawdi village, about 40km from the district headquarter, on Indore-Ahmedabad road.

MP State Home Minister Bhupendra Singh, who had asked farmers to ignore microfinance loan repayments if they can't afford few months ago, is now facing their new demand for a better Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce.
