The social media wags will soon have a new online piñata to whack, and Mets fans will focus on the current season-a disappointing campaign or a thrilling second-half turnaround. The person who was inside the Mr. Met costume Wednesday was sacked, a Mets official told the Associated Press. One Twitter user even asked the Mets to give the employee a raise instead of preventing them from donning the mascot costume in future.

As a Mets fan, I think I speak for generations of Flushing faithful, however, when I confess that I'd rarely felt more rewarded for my lifelong commitment to a constantly derided franchise (one which, I'll remind folks, can claim more World Series titles than the Astros, Mariners, Padres, Angels, Rockies, Rays, Nationals/Expos and Rangers).

Since joining the team in 1964, Mr. Met has become one of baseball's most recognized and, you could say, respected mascots.

But the inning was an appropriate coda to a weird 24-hour stretch for the Mets, whose mascot was captured on video making an obscene gesture to a fan during Wednesday night's 7-1 loss.

Loopholes aside, the incident Wednesday is the latest embarrassment for the Mets, who have had to deal with numerous off-field issues this season, in addition to injuries to core players such as Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Jeurys Familia.

And yes, when the Mets were losing big - which happened quite a bit during my tenure in the suit, from 1994 to 1997 - I was on the receiving end of many four-letter words that weren't "M-E-T-S".

"We apologize for the inappropriate action of this employee", the team said in a statement.

The team did not release the name of the person inside the costume.
