Federal Bureau of Investigation experts visited Qatar in late May to analyze an alleged cyber breach that saw the hackers place the fake story with Qatar's state news agency, the U.S. broadcaster said.
Saudi, the UAE and Bahrain closed all air and land links with Qatar on Monday, after severing ties with the GCC state.
Qatar's government said the 23 May news report attributed false remarks to the emirate's ruler that appeared friendly to Iran and Israel, and questioned whether the USA president, Donald Trump, would last in office, according to CNN.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar's foreign minister, said the measures taken against the country were "surprising", according to the statement, which also cited the minister's interview with the BBC on Tuesday.
"Whatever has been thrown as an accusation is all based on misinformation and we think that the entire crisis is being based on misinformation", he said.

Qatar is in talks with Iran and Turkey to secure food and water supplies amid concerns of possible shortages two days after its biggest suppliers, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, cut trade and diplomatic ties with the import-dependent country.
They accused the tiny Gulf state of harbouring extremist groups and suggested Qatari support for the agenda of Saudi Arabia's regional archrival Iran. Qatar strongly denies supporting terrorism, and on Tuesday called for talks to settle the dispute.
Trump's comments were made despite the fact that Qatar is home to the largest United States military base in the Middle East, with at least 8,000 United States personnel based in the country.
"Such a Trumpification of relations with one another is particularly unsafe in a region that is already rife with crises", he told the newspaper, in an apparent reference to what critics say is the increasingly divisive rhetoric seen since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump previous year. Incidentally, both Iran and Tehran have reportedly said that they will be glad to compensate for Qatar's isolation.
