The global status of British universities has declined in the past year with Cambridge, the highest placed, falling to fifth in the world.
UCD said that the increase is a sign of some recovery in the staff-student ratio, which had fallen outside the ranking of the top 500 past year and is now at 439. Overall, 16 of the 24 Russell Group universities have fallen down the rankings.
Six other Taiwanese universities were also ranked, with Chang Kung University ranked in the 481st-490th category, National Cheng Chi University, National Chung Hsing University and National Taipei University of Technology in the 601st-650th category, and Feng Chia University and Fu Jen Catholic University in the 801st-1000th category.
'Of greater importance, we believe, is the continued strain on university resources, which appears to be having a deleterious impact on not just research, but also the capacity to deliver world-class teaching.
"This has directly improved UCD's ranking under the staff student ratio criterion, but the ratio remains unacceptably low compared with our competitor universities overseas".
The World University Rankings for the last three years have seen Waikato University climb 100 places, up to 292nd.
Some 950 campuses from more than 80 countries were rated in this year's QS world university ranking, using performance indicators such as academic and employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratio and citations per faculty.

Topping the table again this year is Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, followed by three other U.S. institutions - Stanford (2nd), Harvard (3rd) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in fourth.
"Those are symptoms of something as well as likely to be causes for a continuation, so I think we're going to see the United Kingdom and USA lose market share in global students at an accelerated rate over the next five years".
He said companies created by its alumni enjoyed combined revenues of $2 trillion, making them the equivalent of the worlds 11th largest economy.
American and European institutions occupied the top 10. But Taiwan, Japan and Korea, all below 500th place for worldwide students, could fare better if students from the region start to want a world-class education, without the cost and trouble of going to Australia, Europe or North America.
QS notes that Russian universities have maintained the progress they recorded last year with Lomonosov Moscow State University re-entering the top 100 after an absence of several years. It was followed by the National University of Singapore, Tsinghua and the University of Hong Kong.
QS surveyed more than 75,000 academics and more than 40,000 employers, to assess university reputation across four areas: teaching, research, internalisation and employability outcomes.
