The alert was later downgraded to orange, but ash plumes in flight paths are no joke, notes the USGS: "Ash and aircraft do not mix, as volcanic ash is abrasive, melts at jet engine temperatures, and can cause engine failure".
The Aviation Color Code was raised to red, which is the color assigned to the highest possible alert. He further added, "Lightning in the Aleutians is mostly happened because of volcanic plumes, as the meteorological conditions for lightning are not common".
As a result of frequent eruptions, the island has more than tripled its size in the last six months.

The 20 year old suffered the ultimate wardrobe malfunction as she accidentally flashed her knickers while smiling for cameras. The piece featured a structured bodice with a plunging neckline and a draped skirt with a almost hip-high slit.
Alaska Volcano Observatory researchers took a picture 14 minutes after the moment the volcano erupted, adjacent to Unalaska Island, which projected a huge white-gray mushroom cloud form covering the place.
According to the AVO, no further ash emissions have occurred since the explosion. "Additional ash-producing eruptions could occur at any time, however, with no detectable precursors".
It warns that continuing low-level activity could "pose a hazard in the immediate vicinity of the volcano". Prior to its eruption in 2016, the Bogoslof Volcano last erupted in 1992. It has been active since December 2016 and erupted nearly regularly since then. Satellite data from AVO showed that sulfur dioxide gas clouds from one of the many eruptions traveled all the way to Nebraska in December.
