While "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" was a lock to repeat at No. 1 on the box office chart this weekend, "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" was still expected to take the second-place crown - just barely.
The film, which is the second in a series, stars Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana.
King Arthur star Charlie Hunnam has said he would like to include Madonna, the ex-wife of the film's director Guy Ritchie, among his own Knights of the Round Table.
"Snatched" surprised analysts by beating "King Arthur" on the charts.
Ritchie's latest offering had a production budget of £135.8m, which it seems unlikely to make back if the first weekend figures are anything to go by.
Peyton Manning to host ESPY Awards
Since Peyton Manning has retired from the National Football League , many have suggested he would excel in front of the camera. Manning has hosted Saturday Night Live in the past and has shown his humor through numerous commercials in his playing career.
It was a royally bad weekend at the box-office for new releases, but fear not, several new blockbusters are just around the corner.
The gritty re-imagining of the Excalibur myth - starring Charlie Hunnam as Arthur - debuted in third place in the United States, behind box office leader Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Snatched. Last weekend, a film that cost $200 million to make succeeded massively; this weekend, two films that cost a combined $217 million (before big marketing costs) flailed, creating a massive flop crater in the second weekend of May, one that is usually very successful.
"The Fate of the Furious" took fourth place over the weekend with $5.4 million. The mega-budget franchise starter from Warner Bros., Village Roadshow, and RatPac-Dune, suffered poor reviews and opened with only $14.7 million this weekend, which will reportedly end up at around $40 million in domestic gross totals. Critics liked this one even less as it stands at 28% positive on Rotten Tomatoes, yet audiences liked it a bit more as it got a B+ CinemaScore.
On the limited release front, BH Tilt released "Lowriders" in less than 300 theaters. Better off was BH Tilt's East Los Angeles auto culture drama "Lowriders", with Eva Longoria and Demian Bichir, which opened in only 295 theaters and still managed to take eighth place on the charts with $2.4 million.
He said: "The concept didn't resonate with a broad audience, and we're disappointed". After the promising start of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, this film serves as a harsh reminder of the worst a blockbuster can be. The James Gunn-written and -directed picture, which opened higher than its predecessor by an impressive 55%, brought in another estimated $63 million in the US and Canada.
