Starbucks software glitch takes some stores offline

Multiple users complained on Twitter about the outages and said some stores were giving away free coffee. Starbucks has reportedly claimed that the outage was part of a scheduled maintenance/update process, but unfortunately that just wasn't a good enough excuse for the internet.

A statement from Starbucks obtained by CNBC said the company worked overnight Monday to install a "technology update" at store registers in the USA and Canada. Starbucks' computer system is down, which means there's only one way you can get your daily pink drink fix: cash. However, Starbucks corporate is requesting that all stores remain open and "take care of all the customers" in the meantime. Some locations are giving away free coffee to make up for the technical glitch.

"A limited number of locations remain offline, and we are working swiftly to resume full operations in each of these stores", the statement said. According to a local NBC news affiliate, baristas at some locations told customers that Starbucks may have been a victim of a cyber attack.

This isn't the first time in recent months that Starbucks has struggled with its payments technology.
