A police chief was shot responding to a domestic incident Tuesday morning. Amthor serves as Police Chief for the Village of Maybrook and Town of Montgomery. Police have not gone into the house and would not elaborate further on the standoff. He's being treated at a hospital in Newburgh.

Maybrook is a community of about 3,000 people in Orange County, about 60 miles outside of New York City. "Butch is a true gentleman who has dedicated his life to law enforcement", Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus said. Fortunately, he is expected to make a full recovery. He told officers he wouldn't leave until there was a warrant. Shots soon were fired and Amthor was hit.

State police say troopers and a police negotiator are at the scene where the suspect is barricaded. Police converged on the residence and were searching in nearby yards.
