Manchester United's "crazy" schedule is taking its toll mentally and physically ahead of the Europa League final, leaving Jose Mourinho facing a fixture pile-up unlike anything he has experienced.
And executive vice-chairman Woodward said: "We're approaching the end of a compelling season - our first with Jose Mourinho as manager and one which I believe we've made tremendous progress, both on and off the pitch". We had to do it. It's as simple as that.
"And against Crystal Palace, two or three more, and against Southampton, two or three more and that's to try to arrive at the final in the best possible condition". So it was not a choice.
"And I repeat the same - thank you Michael Oliver because we were out in the FA Cup, because if we go to the FA Cup semi-finals it would be a total disaster".
Manchester United is predicting its annual revenue will hit record levels as the club bids to win the Europa League for the first time.
"We know what we are doing and if we can win a third trophy [after the Community Shield and the EFL Cup] it would be magnificent for us because we know that it's a big objective".

The girls' parents have since filed a complaint with the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League. Mya was removed from the softball team and told she couldn't attend the prom.
"If we go on and finish the season strongly and get ourselves in that eighth position, then we can look back at it and say it's been an OK season", said the Northern Irish midfielder. United put in an underwhelming performance at White Hart Lane, but Mourinho was nonetheless pleased with what he saw.
"[Martial] didn't play against Celta because the options were different but he is fine and he is one of the guys that it is very important for him to play 90 minutes. We have the goalkeeper of the Spain national team in De Gea, the No1 goalkeeper in Argentina in Romero, and in Pereira we have a young boy that for me is soon going to be the Portuguese No1".
The Saints are safe in mid-table, but a victory against United could see them rise above West Bromwich Albion into eighth place. We are fighting for the result.
