Mainhart was responding to a call about a disturbance at a house near Dardanelle, about 65 miles west of Little Rock, when he saw a auto linked to that address and stopped it.
According to Bill Sadler with the Arkansas State Police, it is believed that there may have been some information about a suspect vehicle involved in the disturbance call that officers were en route to on Gum Springs Road.
Arkansas State Police is assisting local law enforcement in the search.
The ASP said Friday the suspect was James Arthur Bowden and not James Michael Bowden, 32, as originally stated Thursday during a press conference.
On a post on Facebook, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office says it would like to extend its deepest condolences to the sheriff's office and the Mainhart family.
The suspect's father said the woman who was apparently being held hostage was Bowden's girlfriend.
Bharara rips Trump for inviting 'admitted killer' to White House
Recent reporting indicates that President Donald Trump has invited Rodrigo Duterte, president of the Philippines, to the White House.
Ashley Carpenter of Danville, who was at a home near the Gum Springs Road scene, said Mainhart gave her a ride home Wednesday after her vehicle broke down. Mainhart was responding to a call about a disturbance at the home near Dardanelle, which is about 65 miles (105 kilometers) west of Little Rock.
When police arrived at that location they found the bodies of the two women outside the home.
The deputy was found by a passerby, who notified police. Following his retirement, Mainhart joined the Yell County Sheriff's Department where he had been for five years. "This makes us more aware of what could happen and thankful at the same time".
"There's a special place in hell for people like that", Williams said. "Our hearts are saddened and we are in prayer for his family and the officers who were his comrades who serve and protect this county". The hostage was released unharmed. "Today, the State of Arkansas mourns the loss of Yell County Sheriff's Deputy Lt. Kevin Mainhart".
The fatal shooting of Mainhart was on the same day of the 36th annual memorial to honor fallen officers at the Arkansas state Capitol.
