Nirbhaya 'wanted her rapists to be set on fire, not just hanged'

She said on Saturday that though the accused in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case had indulged in heinous crime, it was not proper to sentence them to death.

Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said the Nirbhaya case will remain an example and a deterrent to all sexual predators that justice for victims of sexual exploitation will always be delivered, come what may. She also demanded that separate fast-track courts handle such cases.

The Supreme Court noted that the brutality, cruelty and the perverse nature of the crime made it a "rarest of rare" case.

"Nirbhaya verdict.Justice prevails.Being in a civil society, in this case,"Public Hanging" was needed to set an example for an everyday menace", tweeted Rishi Kapoor. He said he would seek a review of Friday's judgment from Supreme Court judges.

Supreme Court was hearing an appeal filed by the convicts Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh, challenging the Delhi High Courts March 2014 confirmation of the death penalty declared by a trial court in 2013, ANI reported. Ram Singh who was one the six accused hanged himself in prison, while another who was a juvenile was sent to reform home in August past year.

The bench said the convicts treated the victim as an object of enjoyment, with the single goal of ravishing her. No sooner the order of the court was read out loud, the jam packed court began to applaud.
