Four candidates for Federal Bureau of Investigation director job to be interviewed after Comey firing

They have argued that the White House's explanation - that Comey was terminated due to his handling over the Clinton investigation - meant Trump could have fired him months ago.

In his testimony he defended his former boss, contradicting assertions by administration officials and Trump that Comey had lost the confidence of the FBI's rank-and-file.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Trump said Thursday he chose to fire Comey on his own, before Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's memo that harshly criticized Comey's actions and suggested he should be removed.

Among those expected to be interviewed on Saturday were Michael J Garcia, an associate judge on New York's highest court, and US District Judge Henry E Hudson, a George W Bush appointee who struck down the centrepiece of the Obama administration's health care law in 2010. "Almost all of (the candidates) are very well-known".

Department of Justice officials have already begun interviewing candidates for the permanent Federal Bureau of Investigation director role.

Mr Sessions has faced questions over whether his involvement in Mr Comey's firing violated his pledge to recuse himself from investigations into Russian interference in the election.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the current Senate majority whip and former attorney general of Texas, is another contender to replace Comeny who is being interviewed Saturday.

An interim director does not require confirmation by the Senate and could give the administration more time to search for a permanent pick.

Clapper also said he talked to Comey after Trump invited him to dinner shortly after he took office, saying Comey "was uneasy with it".

If appointed, she would be the FBI's first female director.
