South Korea's new President Moon Jae-in is one of the leading figures in the pro-democracy movement which led to South Korea's first democratic election in 1987.
Moon first spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping and later to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. "If Moon Jae-in can transcend current domestic political mess, and approach this task from a higher vantage point, it would not only allow him to overcome South Korea's current strategic predicament, but it would surely see him shine in the annals of Korean history".
USA officials have said they see no value in resuming worldwide talks with North Korea under current circumstances and that Pyongyang must make clear it is committed to denuclearization.
"Seoul's power is much greater than Pyongyang's, but South Korea's voice can barely be heard on the problems facing the Korean peninsula", the editorial points out.
Tension has escalated on the Korean Peninsula over the few past months over Washington's threat to stage military attacks against Pyongyang in response to its nuclear and missile programmes.
While South Korea, China and Japan all share worry about North Korea, ties between South Korea and China have been strained by South Korea's decision to install a US anti-missile system in defense against the North.

But Alan Woodward, visiting professor of computing at the University of Surrey, said he did not believe it was a targeted attack. Many hospitals cancelled all routine procedures and warned patients not to come to hospital unless it was an emergency.
The North did not report the victory of the South's previous president Lee Myung-Bak at all.
North Korea said US and South Korean agents bribed and coerced a North Korean man into joining the plot which was foiled by its state security ministry.
In their telephone call on Thursday, Moon told Xi he " understands China's interest in the Thaad deployment and its concerns", Yoon said earlier. "These biochemical substances were to be provided with the assistance of the CIA. while the South Korean Intelligence Service was going to provide necessary support and funding for this attempt at assassination on our Supreme Leader".
"South Korea is not the Philippines, and it's not quite possible that Moon Jae-in will become 'Korea's Duterte.' In fact, South Korea is unique".
Moon explained the difficulties faced by South Korean companies that were doing business in China and asked for Xi's "special attention" to ease those concerns, Yoon said.
