According to an ABC News report, Disario responded to a call regarding a man with a gun.
"This is a bad tragedy for our community", Thorp said. Thorp said Disario, a Licking County resident, had six children and was expecting a seventh. The last radio traffic from the police chief was he had the gunman in sight.
Some of the nursing home's 23 residents barricaded themselves during the shooting, but none of them was injured, he said.
The names of the gunman and the slain nursing home employees weren't immediately released.
The number of shots fired in the incident is not yet known and if DiSario was able to fire any shots has not been determined. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, who came to the scene Friday afternoon, said search warrants had been executed on two vehicles owned by the suspect and at his home in Utica, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) away.
Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said the three were killed at the nursing and rehabilitation center in the 200 block of East Main Street. They have all been taken to area hospitals.

US 40 is closed in the area and will remain closed for the remainder of the day, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
In January 2016, Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell Jr. was shot and killed in the line of duty.
The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the probe into what happened. Cottrell had ties to Licking County and had graduated from Central Ohio Technical College.
