The search for an "armed and extremely risky man" who police say fatally shot a woman in the head in Lowell on Thursday continues.
A woman was fatally shot in the head in a residence on Stevens Street in Lowell around 7:30 a.m., according to investigators.
Lowell police lifted a shelter-in-place order late Thursday but are warning people not to approach the suspect, 51-year-old Ross Elliott. The victim, a woman in her 40s, was treated on scene and pronounced dead at an area hospital, Ryan said in a statement.
Elliott fled and is considered armed and extremely risky; officials warn the public to to approach him and instead call 911 immediately. Family members, including the woman's daughter, were present at the time of the shooting. If anyone sees him, they should call 911, the Lowell Police Department at 978-937-3200 or Massachusetts State Police at 781-897-6600 with any information.

At a news conference Thursday evening, authorities said there was a confirmed sighting of Elliott around 4:30 p.m. Authorities said a resident on Pine Street was confronted by the suspect, who had a handgun.
"The investigation is proceeding very quickly", Lowell police Chief William Taylor said. They are now searching an area a few blocks down the street from the crime scene.
