Texas governor signs bill to ban 'sanctuary cities'

Texas A&M Law Professor Lynne Rambo talks with the Standard about what Texans should expect on September 1 - when the law is scheduled to go into effect.

A Beaumont man has been sentenced to death for capital murder in the 2010 deaths of a woman and her 16-year-old daughter. In a Facebook post Tuesday morning, the ACLU said, "Since the passage of SB4, we must issue a travel advisory that anyone planning to travel to Texas in the near future should anticipate the possible violation of their constitutional rights when stopped by law enforcement".

The law also drew rebuke from Mexico, which is Texas' largest trading partner and shares close ties to the state. The original House version of the bill had allowed officers to inquire about status only during a lawful arrest.

Texas doesn't now have any cities which have formally declared themselves sanctuaries for immigrants. The city has had a "safe haven" ordinance since 1999 that prohibits city employees from asking about a person's immigration status, according to lawsuit, which LULAC attorney Luis Vera said was filed in federal court Monday. Abbott said Monday on "Fox and Friends".

The lawsuit targets immigrant rights groups and local officials who are likely to challenge the law. "We will fight this assault in the courts, at the ballot box, and in the streets if we have to".

Hamilton could become rival - Bottas
Hamilton crossed fourth, 36 seconds back, to finish off of the podium for the first time in what feels like forever. Eighth went to Renault's Nico Hulkenberg, with Massa and Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz claiming the final points.

With "race" being such a subjective factor, it is hard to make a case that a law attempting to identify illegal aliens is "racist".

A CBS News report on May 7 observed that the term "sanctuary cities" has no legal definition, but Republicans want local police to help federal immigration agents crack down on criminal suspects who are in the United States illegally. The lawsuit is against Travis County, Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez, Austin Mayor Steve Adler and members of the Austin City Council. She has said she will conform to the state's ban if it becomes law.

"They [Texans] should be, I think, happy because now they have a law in place that will protect them from illegals who have committed crimes", Paxton said.

Arizona's law, passed in 2010, made national news but has since been blunted by legal challenges.
