In the wake of the abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey, several Democratic Congressmen are comparing President Donald Trump to another scandal-ridden leader: Richard Nixon.
Before Comey put himself at odds with Trump by contradicting presidential tweets in which Trump asserted his phones had been ordered tapped by President Barack Obama.
The disclosure that the inspector general's review is ongoing, and far from finished, raises further questions about why Attorney General Jeff Sessions and deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein chose to recommend Comey's firing now, before any official findings by department investigators.
"The FBI is one of our nation's most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement", President Trump said in a statement.
The corrected testimony said that only a small number of emails on the laptop were forwarded.
The view of Comey dropped considerably within Clinton's campaign after the FBI director held a July 2016 news conference to brief reporters and the world on their investigation into Clinton's emails.
Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, meanwhile, said the move to fire Comey was "Nixonian", and joined Schumer's call for a special prosecutor, as did Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez, who tweeted, "Trump fired the man investigating him - a deeply unsafe abuse of power".

Schumer said in November that he had lost confidence in Comey over the Clinton email probe.

Schumer called for the hiring of a special prosecutor in the wake of a wave of Trump firings that include ex-acting Attorney General Sally Yates, ex-US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara, and now Comey.

Comey described the incident in 2007 testimony to Congress, explaining that he believed the spy program put in place after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks was legally questionable.
Gowdy, who encouraged Comey to investigate intelligence leaks to USA newspaper organizations in a House Intelligence hearing in March, said Comey has faced tough challenges.
Clinton last week said she was "on the way to winning" until Comey's letter and the WikiLeaks release of internal campaign emails scared off voters. But Comey told colleagues he felt obligated to go public after having told Congress over the summer that the investigation had been concluded without prosecution.
Christine Chung, a NY lawyer who worked with Comey when he was the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, described him previous year as ever "determined to do the right thing".
