Berkeley Reverses Decision To Ban Ann Coulter From Speaking

"This is the third time this year protesters and rioters have denied conservatives an equal chance to speak at Berkeley, which is, as we said, a taxpayer-funded school nominally subject to the First Amendment", Tucker Carlson told viewers as he introduced Coulter.

A few dozen supporters of President Donald Trump and conservative commentator Ann Coulter converged on a park in downtown Berkeley for a peaceful gathering as two dozen police officers looked on.

Coulter was invited by campus Republicans to speak at Berkeley and her speaking fee was to be subsidized by a conservative group called the Young America's Foundation, which pulled its support Tuesday citing concerns of violence.

Campus officials had originally expressed caution about the planned Coulter speech, saying they had learned of the potential for violent protests from members of the student body.

As for Coulter, Pagadara said the university should have let her speak.

Coulter, one America's best-known and most polarizing conservative political pundits, cast blame on two conservative student groups that withdrew their sponsorship for the event following their clash with university officials.

Coulter then insisted she would go through with her speech on Thursday, despite university objections. He said the school remains committed to working with Berkeley College Republicans and other student organizations to bring speakers of all political backgrounds to campus.

At Berkeley, the site of countless protests and the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s, the level of extremism was unprecedented. Administrators later offered to reschedule Coulter's appearance after facing widespread criticism and a lawsuit for curtailing free speech on campus.

UC Berkeley officials later said the speech would be held on 2 May at an "appropriate, protectable venue".

The university said that it had proposed alternative dates, which Coulter rejected.

The motorcycle enthusiast, who also assisted during inauguration day protests, met with police and local law enforcement this morning to discuss their plan of action going forward, he said. "All of the people who should have been standing up for the First Amendment here all ran away with their tails between their legs".

She said she was "so sorry" that Berkeley had cancelled the talk.

University officials learned of the event being scheduled for April 27 when they read it in a newspaper, he said.

YAF's statement calls into question their mission statement, a commitment to: " ensuring that...young Americans understand and are inspired by the ideas of individual freedom, a strong national defense, free enterprise, and traditional values".

The latest controversy surrounding Coulter's visit has tested Berkeley's legacy as a champion of free speech and elicited criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.

The cancellation comes after almost a week's worth of high drama about whether Coulter would address students at the famously liberal campus and home of the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s.

'What I'm frustrated with right now is the GOP should change their motto to "Next time we'll fight, this next time, we'll show them how good we are"' Coulter said.

They say intelligence and online chatter by groups threatening to instigate violence over the acid-tongued Coulter has them on edge.
