UNESCO Approves Resolution Denying Israeli Claims to Jerusalem

Israel's ambassador to UNESCO, Carmel Shama-Hacohen, was draped in an Israeli flag as he condemned the resolution's passage.

Sweden was the only European country to vote for a UNESCO, angering Israel enough to prompt its foreign ministry to summon of Ambassador Carl Magnus Nesser.

"Any action taken by Israel, the occupying power, to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the city of Jerusalem (al-Quds) are illegal and therefore null and void and have no validity whatsoever", it said.

On Tuesday, UNESCO passed a resolution that criticises Israel over its continuing archaeological excavations in East Jerusalem's Old City.

In a tweet, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahson described the Swedish explanation as "a masterpiece of hypocrisy, playing skillfully with nasty anti-Israel propaganda".

However, the prime minister also mentioned that the number of countries supporting the biannual anti-Israel resolution at UNESCO had dropped.

Lawmakers also called out airline executives on "contracts of carriage" which customers must sign when purchasing a plane ticket. The White House has not weighed in on whether new rules are needed to respond to airline customer service issues.

Pence added: "Even now we're making valuable progress toward the noble goal of peace".

The resolution also said Israel should remove its blockade of the Gaza Strip because it "harmfully affects the free and sustained movement of personnel, students and humanitarian relief items". "Today there are more countries that support Israel or abstain than countries that oppose Israel".

In January, Israel decreased annual payments to the United Nations by $6 million in response to the December 2016 UN Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

However, Netanyahu noted that more countries than usual were opposed to the UNESCO resolution: "More countries opposed this resolution than a year ago and fewer countries supported it".

"This cynical move must be recognized for what it is: a distorted, unsafe and illegitimate revision of history, which serves only as bait for adversaries of Israel seeking to strip the Jewish people's right to self-determination and deny its historic and religious link to Jerusalem". "President Trump is a lifelong friend and a supporter of the State of Israel". But I would especially like to thank the Italian Foreign Minister and Prime Minister. And while Italy has announced it will vote against it, there is a long way to go in order to convince the others because - as the Jerusalem Post reports - the text "is less egregious by Israeli standards than past documents".
