German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whom Le Pen derisively said last week would be France's de facto leader under a Macron presidency, welcomed his win but appeared cautious about proposals to support his economic plans either by relaxing European spending rules or with a dedicated stimulus fund. "But they do not know France!"

"My responsibility will be to gather all men and women together to confront the enormous challenges awaiting us and to act".

"This is how we can give French people the chances they are owed, to each one of you in your professional, personal and family lives".

Macron has said he wants continued intelligence-sharing with the United States and cooperation at the United Nations and hopes to persuade Trump not to pull the USA out of a global accord fighting climate change.

"In a spirit of humility, devotion, with determination to serve France in your name, long the Republic, long live France".

"He said Europe and the world are "watching us" and waiting for us to deend the spirit of the Enlightenment, threatened in so many places". She said the election had shown a division between "patriots and globalists" and called for the emergence of a new political force.

However, elections come round quickly and any complacency from the progressives and the National Front will pounce with flowers and a smile. "And so we have an huge responsibility vis-a-vis the French people, who trust us", said Nicolas Bay, the party's secretary-general.

ABC announces revival of 'American Idol' next season
After a reported bidding war between ABC, Fox, and NBC , American Idol is officially making a return to TV on ABC. There's still no word on who will host and judge, and ABC is now saying that will be announced at a later time.

Sylvain Crepon, a French sociologist and a leading expert on Le Pen's National Front (FN), said the party "has managed to implant its identity politics across the political spectrum".

Macron and Le Pen's polar-opposite visions presented France's 47 million registered voters with the starkest possible choice.

"Investors will now go back to the basics of watching the underlying euro zone economic and inflation data and what implications it may have for monetary policy", said Iain Stealey, a fixed income portfolio manager for JPMorgan Asset Management.

Her desire to free France from the European Union and the shared euro currency contrasted with his argument that both are essential for the future of Europe's third-largest economy. Three former prime ministers in other parties were ousted in primaries.

The Socialists are torn between the radical left of their defeated candidate Benoit Hamon and the more centrist, pro-business branch led by Manuel Valls, who was prime minister under Hollande. But the vote also showed that France's 67 million people are deeply divided, riven by anxieties about terrorism and chronic unemployment, anxious about the cultural and economic impact of immigration and fearful of France's ability to compete against giants like China and Google.

Le Pen has signalled her desire to transform her anti-immigration, anti-EU party into the main opposition to Macron, but there were already signs of an internal ideological battle about which direction to take.

France has been in a state of emergency since then and 50,000 security forces were out to safeguarded Sunday's vote.
