The U.S. Senate confirmed Perdue's nomination Monday afternoon.

So, what it means for agriculture is we now have the head of USDA, Sonny Perdue from Georgia, in place as secretary, and he can start that initial, very important work.
Secretary Perdue earned his DVM from the University of Georgia in 1971.
Perdue, a Republican who grew up on a dairy farm and has managed agribusinesses, was confirmed in an 87-11 vote, garnering significant support from Democratic senators who saw him as an experienced manager who will maintain supports for USA farmers navigating a crop-price slump. He was governor of Georgia from 2003 to 2011.
The nation has a new agriculture secretary. "We are confident that he will continue to be a strong advocate for independent supermarket operators as secretary of the Department of Agriculture".

Roberts also noted that, "The Agriculture Committee received many letters in support of his nomination, including support from 6 former U.S. Secretaries of Agriculture representing both Republican and Democratic presidents and another from almost 700 organizations across the agriculture and food value chain".
The Senate voted to confirm Perdue 8711. Mr Perdue eventually said he would step down from several companies bearing his name to avoid conflicts of interest. He fully understands the challenges and opportunities faced by our industry on issues such as regulatory reform, trade, and agricultural labor.
"Canada has made business for our dairy farmers in Wisconsin, upstate NY and other states very hard", President Trump said.
"The cooperative relationship we have developed over the years will prove a great asset as we work together to ensure our farmers, ranchers, foresters, agribusinesses, and consumers have the resources they need to prosper in today's competitive and global environment".
