"Braidy Industries' decision to locate in Eastern Kentucky has the potential to be as significant as any economic deal ever made in the history of Kentucky", Republican Gov. Matt Bevin said in a news release.
Lawmakers moved quickly on the final day of the 2017 legislative session to give Bevin approval to put up $15 million for an unspecified economic development project that he said could create 500 permanent jobs with average annual salaries of $75,000 a year.
Kentucky is now the third largest auto-producing state, and its aerospace exports have jumped 183 percent in the past five years, according to the state Cabinet for Economic Development. Across the region, thousands of coal jobs have disappeared amid an ongoing industry decline.
The state has agreed to provide up to $10 million in tax incentives based on how many Kentuckians are eventually employed at the plant and $15 million up front which the legislature approved last month.
One of the hardest blows to the economy was the shutdown of an expansive AK Steel mill along the Ohio River just outside Ashland.
