Southwestern Michigan girl, 13, dies after track meet race

Thirteen-year Jasmin Torres of Ida died Tuesday night at an Adrian Hospital.

A seventh-grader became ill after running a 400-meter race at a track meet Tuesday night and later died at a hospital, reports say.

"Jasmin was always smiling, positive, friendly and outgoing", Carsten tells the Detroit Free Press.

An athletic trainer and a physician immediately began checking on Torres, but her condition worsened and an ambulance took her to the hospital. "Her friends valued their relationship with her because who she was".

They made a decision to call an ambulance.

Carsten says she then she began feeling unwell and wasn't acting like herself.

Her cause of death has not been determined. Counselors were available for students Wednesday morning, and will continue to provide support.

Torres played basketball and volleyball this year with no issues.

"Our biggest memory of her will be the fact that we saw her smile daily and hourly, and that's what stands out to me", Carsten said.

"This is certainly a tragedy within our community".

The family is asking for prayers, and there is no vigil planned at this point.
