Instead, the North's state-run KCNA news agency said the Korean People's Army marked the anniversary with a "successful largest-ever artillery drill" under the orders of Supreme Commander Kim in the eastern port city of Wonsan.
North Korea conducted artillery drills yesterday to mark the 85th anniversary of the founding of its million-strong Korean People's Army.
The nuclear-powered USS Michigan, one of four Ohio-class guidedmissile submarines capable of launching cruise missiles, arrived at the South Korean port of Busan, US Naval Forces Korea said in a statement.

The submarine is expected to take part in military exercises with the Carl Vinson warship group, which the USA said it was dispatching to North Korea earlier this month to "maintain readiness" in the region.
Two Japanese destroyers have joined the US carrier group for exercises and South Korea said it was in talks about holding joint naval drills.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said that the UN Security Council must be prepared to impose new sanctions on North Korea, amid escalating tensions over its missile and nuclear programmes.
The USS Michigan submarine arrived in South Korea Tuesday, where it's expected to make contact with the USS Carl Vinson-led carrier group.

This artillery drill appears to have been meant to underscore North Korea's substantial retaliatory capability in the event of a United States attack. He said the North should not underestimate the president's resolve.
"All three countries say they're counting on China to keep North Korea in check, but Beijing has said little except to call on everyone to exercise restraint", he adds.
North Korea has enough artillery to not only cause large casualties to U.S. troops stationed in South Korea, but could wipe out large portions of South Korea's capital city in a purely conventional strike.
At the same time, North Korea intentionally exposed signs of a possible nuclear test at its Punggye-ri test site in the northeast of the country, while directly threatening that it can press the button at anytime.
