13 Reasons Why is a USA series based on a novel of the same name by Jay Asher, and features Aussie actor Katherine Langford as the main character - a high school student who kills herself after a series of culminating failures, brought on by select individuals within her school.

The National Youth Mental Health Foundation headspace has issued a warning for viewers across the globe.

Australian actress Katherine Langford, who plays Hannah, told the Press Association in March it was important to her the show did not appear to glamorise suicide.

In the popular Netflix original series "13 Reasons Why" Hannah Baker commits suicide after a series of rumors and events makes her a social outcast.

Still, reactions have been mixed. [W] hen it came time to discuss the portrayal of the protagonist's suicide in 13 Reasons Why, I of course immediately flashed on my own experience. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she made a decision to end her life.

"It very wrongly indicates that revenge is an excellent reason for suicide", Dr Michael told TODAY Extra hosts on Wednesday. It surely doesn't sugarcoat anything that ultimately happens to Hannah (beware, the show can get very graphic), but it didn't effectively address issues surrounding mental health.

Douglas says that headspace have received "a number of concerns" from young people who have been distressed after watching 13 Reasons Why and also from teachers who have encountered students "airing their distress in classrooms the day after watching".

The sensational role of Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why was originally for Selena Gomez. They contacted the office to reveal their thoughts about the show.

Singer Selena Gomez worked as an executive producer on the series after being introduced to the book in 2009.

Hannah's parents were left devasted and uncertain why their daughter committed suicide since she did not leave a note for them and are left trying to figure out what was actually going on in their daughter's life.

Jay Asher, the author of the book "13 Reasons Why", said, "Suicide is an uncomfortable thing to talk about, but it happens, and so we have to talk about it".
