"I do see a role in getting rid of ISIS, we're very effective in that regard".

Trump has roundly criticized numerous world's worldwide institutions, and once called North Atlantic Treaty Organisation obsolete.

And while Europe has sought solutions to accommodate the uptick in refugees, Trump has sought to close the US' borders to refugees, particularly those from Syria, arguing that they could be a "Trojan horse".

Trump, who has repeatedly called on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to boost defence spending, also pointed to some 30,000 United States troops stationed in Italy and called on Italians to "pay their full and fair share for the cost of defence".

Trump also sharply denounced the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and promised to address it further in the "not-too-distant future".

But on Thursday, the president said a strong Europe was in everyone's advantage.

"As we reaffirm our support for historic institutions, we must also reaffirm the requirement that everyone must pay their full and fair share for the cost of defense", Trump said.

One day after Donald Trump called Canada a "disgrace" for policies that hurt American farmers, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he plans to be respectful and engage with the USA on a fact-based approach to solve problems.

Premier Paolo Gentiloni said at an Ottawa press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Friday that Italy and Canada shared "a common vision on free trade".

"The way to do that is to make arguments in a respectful fashion, based on facts, and work constructively and collaboratively with our neighbours", said the Liberal leader. "Some very unusual moves have been made over the last few hours" Trump said.

Gentiloni also urged the USA and other world powers to "Please keep Africa on top of our agenda", saying various conflicts and crises in sub-Saharan Africa have also helped fuel the migrant crisis. Trump's administration is demanding that Congress fund a bigger US border wall with Mexico and is suggesting that his administration could scrap the USA nuclear deal with Iran. Earlier this week, the administration certified to Congress than Iran was complying - at least technically - with the terms of the deal, clearing the way for Iran to continue enjoying sanctions relief in the near term. "I think the United States right now has enough roles".

"Yes, a strong Europe is very, very important to me as President of the United States. Because that's what it is, it's a menace right now", he said.

Trump hasn't given a timeline for when his administration's review of Iran policy - including whether to stick with the deal - will be complete.
