Attorney, Authorities Battle Over Aaron Hernandez's Brain

Also on Wednesday, Chief Medical Examiner Henry N. Nields conducted an autopsy on Hernandez, and came to the conclusion that his cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging.

The Medical Examiner's office released a statement saying the brain was being kept because it was part of the investigation into Hernandez's death and could require further analysis.

As Celebrity Insider readers know, Hernandez was discovered dead in his jail cell by corrections officers at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in MA around 3:05 a.m. on Wednesday.

Hernandez was said to have been in a single cell in a general population housing unit and had used various items to block his door before he was found. Officers attempted to save his life, then took him to a hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead at 4:07 a.m.

Investigators found three handwritten notes near a Bible in Hernandez's jail cell, according to the statement.

"It is our position that they are holding Aaron Hernandez's brain illegally", he said.

Jose Baez, Hernandez's attorney who represented Hernandez in the trial in which the former Pro Bowl tight end was acquitted of a double murder, believes that Hernandez's brain is being held illegally. "Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bedsheet that he attached to his cell window". They report the notes did not offer a reason for Hernandez's death, but did emphasize his love for his family.
