USA officials say new sanctions could include an oil embargo, a global ban on North Korea's airline, intercepting cargo ships and punishing Chinese banks doing business with Pyongyang.

The US president also spoke about plans for meeting Pope Francis during his upcoming trip to Italy next month. The president will be in Italy in late May for a meeting of the Group of Seven industrialized democracies.
