That vote is expected to be consolidated behind Handel in the runoff. Georgia voters want a bold vision of inclusion and economic opportunity for every Georgia family, so Jon Ossoff is in a strong position to become the first Democrat to represent the Georgia 6thin almost 40 years.
Mr Trump had entered the campaign in recent days and used Twitter to claim that his intervention had halted the young man.
But other Republicans in the race wrapped their arms around Trump to a much greater extent.
Ossoff will now head towards a runoff with Republican candidate Karen Handel, who finished second in the race with 19.8 percent of the vote out of a field with at least three other Republican candidates.
"He just called to say, "Congratulations" and encourage me and let me know that as we go into June 20, that it's all hands on deck for Republicans and we take it very seriously", she said on "New Day". The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the political arm of House Democrats, paid for field staff for Ossoff early on in the race, and made a late, large investment in radio and mail created to increase Democratic turnout.
CNN projects that Ossoff will miss the 50% he needed to win outright.
Ossoff had the strongest showing Tuesday in a hotly contested race that some saw as a gauge of President Donald Trump's popularity.

Jon Ossoff led a splintered GOP field by a wide margin, but did not top the necessary 50-percent threshold in the race for Georgia's 6th congressional district, prompting a runoff election in June against former Secretary of State Karen Handel.

The progressive activist group MoveOn.org hailed "Ossoff's first-place finish tonight [as] a huge triumph for the Resistance and for progressives".
"Your voices are going to ring out across this state and across this country", said Ossoff to a room full of supporters Tuesday night. "We fight on, we have defied the odds". We have shattered expectations.
The former Georgia secretary of state's stances on social issues are certain to be a focus in the runoff - particularly her effort to stop the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the breast cancer charity where she was senior vice president for policy, from funding screenings through Planned Parenthood because she opposes abortion rights. But before we get to that, here's Jon Ossoff last night, essentially, declaring victory.
"I think a lot of people will tell you it can't, and a lot of Russian bots will try to convince you it'll never happen, but absolutely it can".
Mr Ossoff, who ran on a pledge to "Make Trump Furious", portrayed the NY tycoon as a Washington insider.
Reporter Ron Allen explained, "Well, I think it's more than symbolic, it's a sign, they hope, of things to come".

By the way, Ossoff does not live in GA-6. Ossoff, who grew up within district boundaries, has explained that he lives "10 minutes" away in order to facilitate the graduate studies of his girlfriend, an Emory University medical student.
