North Korea has on occasion conducted missile or nuclear tests to coincide with big political events and often threatens the United States, South Korea and Japan.
North Koreans have been seen practicing choreographed dance routines in their brightly coloured national dress, reports CNN.
North Korea saw the toppling of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Moammar Gadhafi in Libya - neither of whom had nuclear weapons - as proof of the weapons' power.
On Thursday, the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim watched from an observation post as special forces dropped from light transport planes "like hail" and "mercilessly blew up enemy targets".

The United States a few days ago dispatched what Trump called an "armada" of ships in a show of force, including an aircraft carrier, into waters off the peninsula amid fears that North Korea was preparing another round of nuclear or missile tests.
He will also aim to reassure allies in South Korea and Japan that the USA will take appropriate steps to defend them against North Korean aggression.
All eyes are on the Trump administration's plans for North Korea, with concern growing since last week's USA missile strike in Syria, in response to a deadly gas attack.

The company is making "a pretty big statement " to that effect by dropping O'Reilly, said Hall, the American University professor. On May 1, Eric Bolling, a co-host of " The Five ", will debut an hourlong show in the 5 p.m. slot.

Eye witnesses said long-range and submarine-based missiles were shown at the anniversary parade on Saturday.
It was the first time North Korea had shown the missiles, which have a range of more than 1,000 km (600 miles), at a military parade.
As for Sunday's missile launch, a Japanese Defense Ministry source speculated that the missile was under development and not ready for deployment.
In his annual New Year's address, Kim said that the country's preparations for an inter-continental ballistic missile launch have "reached the final stage".
One of the debuts included the Pukkuksong-2 SLBM, a submarine-launched ballistic missile, loaded on trucks, according to Reuters.
Also on display, analysts said, were a midrange missile powerful enough to reach USA air bases in Guam, and a new solid-fuel midrange missile that could be fired from land mobile launchers, which would also make it hard to detect before it's launched.
Kim has overseen three nuclear tests and a string of missile and rocket launches since taking over after the death of his father, dictator Kim Jong Il, in late 2011.
